What is Acai?
The Acai (pronounced Ah-sah-ee) Palm grows in tropical Central and South America, mainly in the floodplains and wetlands. It produces a crop of berries twice per year. The fruit deteriorates rapidly after harvest; therefore, outside of the tree’s growing region, the fruit is generally only available as juice or fruit pulp that has been frozen or dried, preserving the high ORAC* antioxidant value of the Acai fruit.
The dense pigmentation of Acai is from its high antioxidant phytonutrients (flavonoid polyphenols) which give the berries their deep color. Unlike most other berries, the antioxidant power of Acai quenches both water soluble and fat soluble free radicals.
